10 East Asian countries to analyze and share information on persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

▷ National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) will hold the 12th Workshop on Information Warehouse of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the 7th Analysis Training of POPS in East Asian Countries on September 12-15.

▷ The workshop will serve as an opportunity to touch upon the implementation of the Stockholm Convention and information sharing as well as share Koreas leading analysis technologies.


 National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) under the Ministry of Environment will hold the 12th Workshop on Information Warehouse of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) on September 12 at Grand Hyatt Hotel, Incheon to share information and seek ways to foster cooperation among countries. 


The workshop, joined by experts from 10 East Asian countries, is aimed at sharing information and analysis technologies on POPs to support the implementation of the Stockholm Convention. 


* Stockholm Convention: An international environmental treaty, which took effect in May 2004, aims to eliminate and mitigate listed pollutants and conduct global monitoring against listed substances to protect the human health and the ecosystem from POPs 


The 10 participating countries are Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines. 


In the workshop on September 12, each government will introduce the management status of POPs and discuss efficient ways to use monitored data.  


In particular, they will have discussion on how to advance the Monitoring Information System of POPs in East Asia in order to link with Global Monitoring Information System under the Stockholm Convention. 


The 7th Analysis Training of POPS in East Asian Countries on September 13-15 will offer training on advanced analysis technologies for experts from 10 countries, tailored to their needs. 


The training program consists of on-site sampling of POPs in emissions, pre-treatment of POPs such as sampling and refinement at a lab and instrumental analysis using high resolution analysis device. 


Seok Gwang-seol, Director of Chemical Substance Research Division at NIER, said that "these workshops will be a good opportunity to contribute to implementing the Stockholm Convention by sharing information on POPs in East Asia and offering training on advanced analysis technologies."
